        def dfs(node):

            leftGain = max(dfs(node.left), 0)
            rightGain = max(dfs(node.right), 0)
            
            priceNewpath = node.val + leftGain + rightGain
            self.maxSum = max(self.maxSum, priceNewpath)

            return node.val + max(leftGain, rightGain)
   
        dfs(root)
        return self.maxSum
